Biography
Steve is a leading intellectual property lawyer with a reputation for combining excellent skills as a trial lawyer, patent attorney, and engineer.
He has cross-examined the opposing party’s technical experts and witnesses in 19 major patent trials, litigated more than 100 patent cases in federal district courts and other forums, including 40 in the International Trade Commission, and prosecuted more than 100 patent applications in the Patent Office. In the middle of one of the “smart phone war” patent trials, Judge Pender made the following comments when Apple’s expert left the stand: “Mr. Anzalone, I wrote comments down about how high an opinion I had of your cross-examination. I considered it skillful, dynamic, artful, prepared, highly organized. It was terrific. It really was.”
Steve has been recognized as a top-rated intellectual property litigation attorney in Super Lawyers by Thomson Reuters (2017-20), as a leading attorney in International Trade: Intellectual Property (Section 337) in Chambers (2021), as a recommended attorney in Patent Litigation in The Legal 500 (2016-20), and as a recommended attorney in ITC litigation in IAM Patent 1000 (2015-20). Legal 500 reports that he “really digs into the technical nuances,” while IAM Patent 1000 refers to “textbook-worthy cross-examinations of well-known technology experts.”
Current/recent engagements by Mr. Anzalone include the defense of the electrosurgical instruments of two different clients in patent cases in Delaware, the ITC, PTAB, and Germany; and the defense and redesign of a major cable network to provide clearance against TiVo/Rovi patent assertions in the ITC, district court, and Customs.
Prior engagements on behalf of patentees include litigation against Apple and LG on patent portfolios directed to telecommunications or computers, including LTE, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi (See Reuters, Dec. 21, 2015, “Ericsson signs patent deal with Apple, shares soar”); and on patent portfolios covering DVD, CD, or JPEG standards, resulting in the jury finding the CEO personally liable and the judge entering judgments against two defendants in Los Angeles totaling over $100 million.
Prior engagements by Steve on behalf of implementers include risk management and litigation in the ITC and PTAB for a major flash memory manufacturer against Spansion/Cypress, resulting in the client being paid $29.5 million after bringing its own offensive case; and for a major mobile phone provider against Kodak, resulting in the Chief Judge finding the claims not infringed and invalid.
