Partner Jayne Reardon discusses the origins of Model Rule of professional Conduct 5.4, which prohibits lawyers from sharing legal fees with non-lawyers or from allowing non-lawyers to have an equity interest in law firms. She posits that Rule 5.4 is not necessary to protect the professional independence of lawyers, as many other Rules already address that duty.
