Biography

Doug is an engineer, registered patent attorney, and enjoys counseling portfolio companies, Private Equity, Venture Capital and Investment Banking firms on intellectual property strategies, due diligence and portfolio management.  Doug works on both the buy and sell side of M&A transactions.  Doug has successfully prosecuted and defended over 100 different Intellectual Property suits in numerous federal and state courts, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Court of Appeals Federal Circuit. His cases have covered patent, trademark, trade secret, unfair competition, domain name, non-compete, license agreement and copyright infringement claims. He has prosecuted 100’s of patent applications on numerous consumer and industrial products for middle market companies and routinely conducts brand clearances and prosecutes trademark and copyright applications to help clients protect their Intellectual Property positions.

Prior to entering the law profession, Doug worked at Navistar International as an engineer in the heavy-duty truck body design department. He also clerked in Whirlpool Corporation’s patent department while attending law school at Valparaiso University. While a Purdue Engineering student, Doug interned at a gray iron foundry implementing statistical process control measures in various departments on the foundry floor.

Doug has served as a judge for the Crain’s Detroit Business M&A Awards and as president of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) – Detroit.  Doug is a member of the Michigan District Optimist Club and enjoys mission trips in Central and South American with his friends at Kensington Community Church. His hobbies include riding his Harley, fly fishing, gardening, travelling with his wife and investing.
