Biography

Senior transactional lawyer, with tier-1 professional experience in a broad range of jurisdictions, including England, the Asia Pacific region (primarily Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and Vietnam), and the Middle East (primarily, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates).

Specializing in non-contentious major upstream energy projects, including multi-billion dollar upstream oil and gas projects, power generation, and mining; and engineering and construction projects.

Substantial experience also in energy and construction industry dispute resolution, with leading roles in large-scale ICC, UNCITRAL and LCIA and LMAA cross-border arbitration.

Broad commercial professional experience including the negotiation and drafting of numerous high-value sale and purchase agreements for hydrocarbons product; the negotiation and drafting of time and voyage charterparties for the international transportation of product; and cross-border joint ventures and other forms of collaboration or teaming contract.

Representative Transactions
  • Lead in-house negotiator for Oman Oil Co E & P (as purchaser), in connection with the multi-billion dollar acquisition of a shareholding in the Khazzan-Makerem gas field development in the Sultanate of Oman.
  • Lead projects counsel acting for Petroleum Development Oman (a major Royal Dutch Shell-managed upstream oil and gas facility in Oman) in connection with numerous high-value upstream oil and gas projects in-country.
  • Lead counsel acting for Petroleum Development Oman, as project company, in connection with numerous engineering construction disputes, typically with the company’s main construction contractor, covering issues such as Extension of Time, Variations, and defective work, a number of these claims went to international arbitration.
  • Lead in-house lawyer for Qatargas Operating Company, Qatar, in connection with a multi-billion dollar syndicated project financing.
  • Principal external legal counsel for a major Japanese trading house, in connection with an innovative lease financing of a coal-fired thermal power generation project in Indonesia.
  • External legal counsel for a major Japanese commercial bank with regard to a complex loan restructuring against a corporate borrower in Indonesia.
  • Lead external lawyer for a UK upstream oil and gas developer in connection with the divestment of a stake in an oil and gas project in Vietnam.
Presentations & Teaching Experience
  • A number of public presentations and in-house training programs on a range of matters, including legal issues arising from cross-border transactional work, and ethics and compliance training.
Publications
  • A number of short publications in various legal and professional journals, for example for the UK Energy Institute, on a range of topics.
